Waldron Named Big Ten Freshman of the Week

Lincoln – After being named Big Ten Co-Pitcher and Big Ten Freshman of the Week last week, Nebraska freshman Matt Waldron was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Tuesday morning. It’s the first time a Husker has earned consecutive Big Ten Freshman-of-the-Week honors.

It’s the third straight week the Huskers have earned freshman-of-the-week honors, as Chad Luensmann was honored two weeks ago

After tossing a complete-game shutout against Penn State, Waldron backed it up with 8.0 scoreless innings against the Indiana Hoosiers. The Huskers blanked the Hoosiers 2-0 to secure a series victory and went on to the sweep the series, securing the No. 2 seed at this week’s Big Ten Tournament.

Dating back to the end of his start at Michigan State on Sunday, May 8, Waldron has tossed 18.2 straight scoreless innings. Waldron allowed just three hits last Friday to the Hoosiers and walked two batters in a game for the first time all season, while striking out a career-high seven. Waldron kept IU’s offense guessing all night, as six of his seven punch-outs were looking. Waldron retired Indiana in order six times on the night and allowed a runner to reach third base just once.

Nebraska opens the Big Ten Tournament tomorrow at 1:03 p.m. against the No. 7 seed Michigan State Spartans. Every game of the tournament will be carried live on the Big Ten Network.
