Senior Mattie Fowler was named to the Academic All-District 7 first team on Thursday, the College of Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced. Fowler was honored as a first-team academic all-district selection for the second straight season.
Fowler is the 11th Husker to earn multiple appointments to the all-district first team. She was one of four infielders to make the team in District 7. Fowler was also one of only eight Division I honorees to make the team as a graduate student. She earned her degree in finance last may and is halfway through her MBA program at Nebraska.
A native of Tucson, Ariz., Fowler now moves onto the national CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot, where she hopes to increase the Huskers' all-time total to 30 academic All-Americans. Nebraska leads all softball programs with 29 all-time CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, a total that ranks second in NCAA history among all female sports, trailing only the Husker volleyball team.
Fowler carried a 4.0 grade-point average in her first semester as an MBA student after posting a 3.80 GPA as an undergrad. The only four-year captain in the history of Husker softball, Fowler also served as the 2014-15 Nebraska Student-Athlete Advisory Committee President. She was named the 2015-16 Nebraska Female Student-Athlete of the Year and a Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient.
On the field, Fowler is batting .333 this season with six doubles, three homers and 31 RBIs. She owns three walk-off hits this spring and has totaled 162 hits in her career.
