Deeg, Thiele Lead Huskers in California

Napa, Calif. - Haley Thiele and Cassie Deeg each fired rounds of 78 to lead the Nebraska women's golf team on the opening day of the Silverado Showdown on Sunday.

Thiele, a freshman from Wahoo, Neb., and Deeg, a senior from Hugo, Minn., each managed a six-over-par first round on the par-72, 6,206-yard layout of the Silverado North Course to head into Monday's second round in a tie for 65th place in the 93-player field.

Senior Cassidy Stelzmiller added a 79, while fellow senior Morgan Smejkal settled for an 80 over the first 18 holes to produce Nebraska's 315 team score. The Huskers head into the second round in 18th place in the 18-team field.

No. 11 Stanford took control on the tournament's opening day with a two-under-par 286. The Cardinal own a four-shot lead over the co-hosts from Colorado (290), while the co-hosts and defending champions from Oregon and LSU are tied for third at 293.

Oregon's Cathleen Santoso carded the best round of the day with a five-under-par 67, while Duck teammate Kelsey Ulep is just one shot back in second place at 68.
