Senior Defensive End Jason Ankrah
On last season’s loss providing motivation
“It was our first loss, and it was a loss out there that we feel like we shouldn’t have lost. It’s one of the losses we took into our offseason program to provide motivation in our work habits.”
On UCLA’s offense last season
“We knew that they were a big-play offense. We knew that they had a really good running back and a really good quarterback with a nice receiving corps. They came out, and they played hard. They played good, and we commend them on how they played. We knew we didn’t play our best, and they just caught us off guard.”
On UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley
“I don’t know exactly what the game plan is for him, but we know that he’s a really good player. He’s a really shifty quarterback. We’re going to play a couple of those type of quarterbacks this year. I’m sure our game plan will be one that will tone him down and immobilize him a little more. We’ll got a good plan for him, I’m sure.”
On playing against Hundley last season
“When we watched film, his first play was a 70-yard run for a touchdown, and we knew then that he could run. We took that into account. He could also throw, so we can’t just focus on one dimension with him. We’ll just treat him like any other quarterback and try to take parts of his game out.”
On UCLA’s offensive speed
“I’m not really sure about it. It’s Monday, so we haven’t really talked with the coaches yet. I know they had a bye week last week. They still have the same coaches. They still run the same offense. They probably have a couple tweaks. I’m not really sure what our game plan is.”
On more substitutions on the defensive line
“It’s been really good. We’ve have a lot of cats that can play. We have trust in a lot of defensive linemen. We have a lot of guys who are growing up real fast, and we’ve just got a rotation going. We’re all making plays, and we’re all really excited about where we’re heading right now.”
On substitutions helping the fatigue
“When you’re tired, your legs get heavy and your technique starts to break down a little bit. When we’ve got all those guys who can play, we have a lot of fresh legs and a lot of guys who can rest while they go in and do the exact same thing. It helps out a lot.”
On the young players learning
“When you know what the guy behind you is doing, along with what you have to do, you can take into account how you can help him out instead of just focusing on what you have to do to be successful on the play. A lot of the linebackers are growing up. (Josh) Banderas, a freshman out there, was making calls for us this past weekend. It’s real exciting to see. At one point, we had four freshmen defensive linemen and two freshmen linebackers in the game. They took real control of what we had to do. When playing these hurry-up offenses, having all of these guys who can substitute in helps out a lot.”
On Randy Gregory’s impact
“It meant a lot. He’s also a leader in the room, and he tries to learn as well. Any questions he has, I pull him to the side and answer them as much as I can. Athletically, he’s a gifted kid. He has a real bright future here. He’s brought a lot to the table, just as the freshmen defensive linemen have brought a lot to the table, and I’m real confident in him.”
On being surprised by Gregory’s immediate impact
“He came in saying he wanted to play. He didn’t really take it as a year off to learn the defense. He came in knowing he wanted to learn the defense and be in the starting lineup, or at least the rotation. He had the mindset from the day he got here, and I helped him out as much as I could. Now he’s up there, and he’s doing a real good job.”
On being surprised by Gregory’s leadership
“When you’re a new face, you don’t want to speak up on things when you haven’t really done anything yet. I understand that, because that’s how I was. He doesn’t speak up much, but he does when he has to. That’s a really good trait about him.”
On the alternate jerseys
“I like them a lot. I’ve always wanted to wear the black. It would have been cool to have all black, but I’m fine with the black jerseys and the white helmets. It looks neat. I’m excited to wear them this weekend.”
