Nebraska Falls to Texas State

College Station, Texas - Chandler Hall hit a two-run homer and did not allow an earned run in the circle to fuel Texas State's 5-1 upset of No. 24 Nebraska on Saturday morning at the Texas A&M Invitational.

Hall (4-5) got all the run support she would need when a costly Husker error led to a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning. She then helped herself out with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to stretch the lead to 4-0. That was more than enough for Hall in the circle, as she allowed only six hits and struck out seven.

Senior right-hander Ashley Hagemann (6-7) took the loss for Nebraska, which fell to 10-9 on the year. Three of the five runs Hagemann allowed were earned, as she tossed a seven hitter with six strikeouts.

Offensively, Nebraska has held under five hits for the fifth straight game, after averaging 9.6 hits per contest through the first 19 games. Sophomore Tatum Edwards, who moved to the leadoff spot in a shuffled Husker lineup, went 2-for-3, while seniors Madison Drake, Ashley Guile and Nikki Haget each had a hit, as did junior pinch-hitter Megan Southworth.

Nebraska's best early scoring chance came in the top of the first. Tatum Edwards drew a walk to begin the game and was at second with two outs, following a one-out sacrifice bunt from junior Gabby Banda. Guile then singled to left and Edwards tried to score on the play, but was tagged out at home as she tried to slide around the catcher.

The Huskers' struggle with walks and errors then cost them again in the bottom of the frame. A leadoff walk, an infield single where Nebraska had no play and an error loaded the bases with only one out. Hagemann came back with a strikeout before Haley Lemons lined an 0-2 pitch into left center for a two-run single to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead.

Nebraska missed a chance to cut into the lead in the top of the third. Haget and Tatum Edwards began the inning with back-to-back singles, but the next three hitters were retired on a popped up bunt, a fielder's choice ground out and a strikeout.

Hall then extended the lead to 4-0 when she launched a two-out, two-run homer to right in the bottom of the fifth. The Bobcats added another insurance run in the sixth.

The Huskers finally cracked the scoreboard in the top of the seventh. Drake began the inning with a double and scored when Southworth pinch hit and reached on an infield single. On the hit, an error allowed Drake to score from third for the Huskers' lone run.

Nebraska returns to action later on Saturday, facing No. 21 Texas A&M at approximately 5:15 p.m.
