Huskers Lead Academic All-Big 12 Teams

Lincoln ? With the release of the Academic All-Big 12 Track and Field Team on Wednesday, May 14, the Nebraska men’s and women’s track and field teams were honored for their hard work in the classroom. Of the 278 student-athletes named to the team, the Huskers lead the league on the both the men’s and women’s sides, with 30 student-athletes selected to the women’s team and another 28 selected to the men’s team.

 

Among its 58 sections, the track and field team had three student athletes earn a perfect 4.0 grade-point average. The perfect GPA students on the women’s team included Joslyn Dalton (Communication Studies) and Samantha Musil (Elementary Education), while the men’s team was led by Scott Jorgenson (History).

 

The Husker women produced 28 first-team honorees and another two selections to the second-team list. Of the 30 student-athletes honored, 22 of them will compete this weekend on the 32-athlete team at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships in Lubbock, Texas.

 

The men’s team also will have a strong representation in Lubbock, as 14 of the 28 honorees will compete in the scarlet and cream over the weekend. Overall, the Husker men had 23 first-team selections and five second-team honorees.

 

Athletes are nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the men’s track & field academic all-league squad consisted of 96 first team members combined with 36 on the second team, while the women had 114 first team recipients and 32 student-athletes on the second team.  First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

 

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his/her team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
