Barrefors Win Jim Click Decathlon

Tucson, Ariz. ? The Nebraska mutli-eventers wrapped up the first two days of the three-day Jim Click Shootout last night at Arizona’s Roy P. Drachman Stadium with the conclusion of the men’s decathlon and women’s heptathlon. True freshman Bj?rn Barrefors and senior Skyler Reising each posted personal-best and NCAA provisional-qualifying scores, while combining to take the top two spots in the decathlon. In the heptathlon, defending Big 12 champion Megan Wheatley and sophomore Rachel Butler finished third and sixth, respectively.

 

Entering day two of the 10-event decathlon, Reising was in first with 4,067 points, ahead of Barrefors’ second-place score of 4,009 by just 58 points. The youngster from Stockholm, Sweden, passed the senior on day two with a final score of 7,448, just 52 points short of the NCAA automatic standard of 7,500. The score is a personal best for Barrefors, topping his previous best of 7,405, while also moving him to fourth on the all-time NU outdoor performance list. Reising also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a final score of 7,325, increasing his previous best of 7,295 by 30 points. Reising’s score moves him to sixth on the all-time NU outdoor list, jumping three points ahead of Lee Martin’s score of 7,322.

 

Wheatley finished right where she started entering day two, in third place. Her final score of 5,360 points provisionally qualifies her for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. However, the Perth, Australia, native is expected to score much higher as the season goes on as she holds a PR of 5,643 points, scored a last season’s Big 12 Outdoor Championships. Butler also finished where she started entering day two, coming in sixth with a score of 4,851, 54 points shy of her personal best.

 

The rest of the Husker track and field team will compete in the Jim Click Shootout later today with all the other events in competition throughout the day. Live results are not available, so depending on when results are made available, a full recap will be posted late tonight or tomorrow afternoon.
