Huskers Tied for Fifth in Arizona

Sedona, Ariz. - Despite extensive travel delays that forced the Huskers to miss Friday's practice round, the Nebraska women's golf team sits in a tie for fifth place heading into tomorrow's final day at the Red Rocks Invitational.

Saturday's first round was suspended by darkness at the Oakcreek Country Club with Nebraska at 24-over-par. The Huskers and the rest of the 16-team field will complete the first round Sunday morning before moving on to the second round.

Junior Elli Brown led Nebraska's charge up the leaderboard, playing two-over-par golf on the par-72, 6,114-yard layout through the first 15 holes. Brown heads into the final day of the tournament in a tie for fifth place, four strokes off the pace set by Northwestern's Alice Kim, who is two-under through 16.

Junior Allison Stewart also played solid golf for the Huskers on Saturday, completing her opening round with a six-over-par 78 playing out of the No. 4 spot in the NU lineup.

True freshman Kate White, who is playing at the No. 1 spot, sits at seven-over-par through 15 in a tie for 37th, while fellow freshman JC Stevenson closed her first round with a nine-over-par 81 in the No. 3 spot.

Senior Chrissie McArdle managed an 11-over-par 83 at the completion of her first round, while freshman Charlotte Wendner is 10-over through 13 holes. Wendner is playing as an unattached individual.

Northwestern enters the final day of the tournament in first place at 10-over-par, while Michigan is just one shot back at 11-over. Washington State sits in third at 18-over, while the hosts from Northern Arizona are in fourth place at 22-over, just two strokes ahead of the Huskers and Portland State in a tie for fifth.

“We’re not going to make any excuses because we always feel like we can play better golf, but we probably would have benefited quite a bit by getting on the course and getting our practice round in,” Nebraska Coach Robin Krapfl said. “Still, we played pretty solid golf today and we feel like we can cut down our scores tomorrow and give ourselves a chance to climb the leaderboard.”

Live scoring of Sunday's action will be available on Huskers.com through GolfStat.com.
