The Nebraska men’s golf team posted a team score of 293 on Saturday and jumped three spots to a tie for second place after two rounds of play at the Ron Smith/USF Invitational. The second round was played in a steady rain at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Tampa, Fla.
After an opening round of 299, Nebraska sat in a tie for fifth with Marquette, but NU used a balanced team effort on Saturday to move up the standings. Four Huskers posted rounds of 75 or better on Saturday, including even-par rounds of 72 by seniors Brady Schnell and Ty Capps on the 7,014-yard layout.
The Huskers’ two-round total of 592 leaves them in a three-way tie with Jacksonville State and Troy for second place. Both Jacksonville State and Troy tied for the day’s best round with team scores of 290 to vault up the leaderboard. Team leader Middle Tennessee State posted the day’s third-best round with a 292, good for a two-round total of 580 and a 12-shot lead heading into Sunday’s final round. Florida Southern and New Orleans are tied for fifth at 593, one shot behind the Huskers.
Nebraska’s top individual through two rounds is senior Ryan Lenahan who posted a 74 on Saturday to go along with an opening 73. Lenahan’s three-over par 147 total places him in a tie for 12th place after two rounds. The even-par rounds by Schnell and Capps allowed them to climb the leaderboard. Both golfers have two-round totals of 148 and are tied for 16th position.
Freshman Jamie Marshall posted his second consecutive 75 on Saturday and sits in a tie for 28th place at 150. Senior Drew Reynolds was the only Husker to struggle on Saturday, posting an 81. His 156 total left him a tie for 63rd place. Jose Toledo of New Orleans leads the individual race with a 140 total after two rounds of play.
The USF Invitational wraps up on Sunday with the final 18 holes.
