Preparations Under Way for Geis Memorial Golf Tournament

The fifth annual Julie Geis Memorial Golf Tournament is less than a week away and the Nebraska softball program hopes to fully endow the scholarship at the event, which is set for Monday, Aug. 14. By raising $250,000 the Julie Geis Memorial Scholarship will become the second fully endowed softball scholarship at Nebraska.

Once fully endowed, the scholarship lives off the interest and ensures that both the scholarship and Julie Geis live on forever with the Nebraska softball program.

The fifth annual tournament begins with 10 a.m. registration on Aug. 14, followed by an 11 a.m. shotgun start. Following the golf tournament, a reception will be held that will include NU Athletic Director Steve Pederson. A live auction and the presentation of the 2006-07 Julie Geis Memorial Scholarship will conclude the festivities.

Proceeds from the golf tournament and auction will go toward reaching the $250,000 mark for the Julie Geis Memorial Scholarhsip. Geis, a four-year letterwinner for the Husker softball team from 1976-79 was killed in the WorldTradeCenter attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. The scholarship, which is awarded annually to a current member of the Nebraska softball team, was created in her memory with the goal of making it a fully endowed scholarship.

With that goal well within reach, Nebraska softball is close to endowing its second memorial scholarship. The Richard Raimondi Memorial Scholarship, created in December of 2001, was the first fully endowed scholarship for a female athlete at Nebraska.
