Four Huskers Earn All-Big 12 Honors

Oklahoma City, Okla. ? Junior Jessica Yoachim was a first-team All-Big 12 selection, while senior Anne Steffan, junior Trisha Tannahill and sophomore Ashley DeBuhr each earned second-team accolades at the Big 12 softball banquet on Wednesday.

Yoachim, Steffan and Tannahill were each repeat selections, while DeBuhr earned the first honor of her career. Yoachim and Tannahill were each a first-team selection last season. Steffan was a first-team selection in 2003 and was a second-team honoree last year.

Yoachim has started every game this season and is hitting .352 with 17 sacrifices and 26 stolen bases. In Big 12-only games, Yoachim boasts a team-best .320 average, eight stolen bases, a .390 on-base percentage and has committed only one error in 42 chances at third base. A native of Arkansas City, Kan., Yoachim broke the school record for hits in a game earlier this season with a perfect 5-for-5 game against Texas-San Antonio.

Steffan, the Huskers’ starting second baseman and leadoff hitter, leads the team with a .414 average. Her 75 hits rank fourth on the NU single-season chart and her 30 stolen bases are second in school history, one shy of the school record. Steffan ranks in the top six in the Big 12 conference in average, hits, stolen bases and on-base percentage. The Mankato, Minn., hit safely in a school-record 26 games earlier this season, breaking the previous record by seven games.

Tannahill is hitting .276 with three home runs and 23 RBIs in 2005. A clutch hitter, she ranks second on the team with five game-winning RBIs, including producing the winning run in the Huskers’ last two victories over 15th-ranked Missouri and No. 10 Oklahoma. A native of Overland Park, Kan., Tannahill has drawn 12 walks and has been hit by a career-high five pitches to post an on-base percentage of .344.

DeBuhr leads the league in complete games, games started, innings pitched and ranks second in strikeouts. Overall, she ranks in the top 10 in the conference in nine categories. A native of Beatrice, Neb., DeBuhr is 21-17 with a 1.74 ERA this season. She has struck out 270 hitters, which ranks fourth in single-season school history and is a Nebraska sophomore record.

NU’s four All-Big 12 selections and the rest of the Huskers open play at the Big 12 Tournament tonight at 5 p.m. when they face Iowa State in the play-in round. A win would officially put Nebraska into the Big 12 Tournament and pit the Huskers against Oklahoma in a 7:30 p.m. game.
