Lincoln, Neb?Gitte Ostermann, a senior on the No. 38 Nebraska women’s tennis team, received a bid for the second straight season to compete in the NCAA Tournament in singles play. She is an automatic qualifier in the Central Region and is also the first player in school history to receive two bids to the NCAA Championships. Competition begins on May 23, in Athens, Ga.
Head Coach Scott Jacobson was elated with the selection of his senior star.
“This is the best year of her career,” Jacobson said. “This is a credit to the level of commitment she has had during the entire season.”
Ostermann, ranked No. 43 nationally, finished the season with a career-best 26 singles wins, which ranks fourth in NU’s single-season wins chart. In the fall, Ostermann defeated two ranked opponents to win the ITA Regional Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
She has been the Huskers’ No. 1 singles player throughout her career at NU and has tied Lisa Hart for No. 4 all-time at NU with 121 career combined wins. In last year’s NCAA Tournament, the senior from Luneberg, Germany fell in a three-set thriller in the first round.
Ostermann and the rest of the Huskers face No. 22 South Carolina in the NCAA team Tournament on May 13, in Athens, Ga.
