NU Announces 2005 Captains, Schedule

Lincoln, Neb. ? Nebraska Head Cross Country Coach Jay Dirksen announced the men’s and women’s team captains for the upcoming 2005 season Friday, as voted on by their teammates. NU will feature multiple captains next season who will lead a young group of athletes including only three seniors out of 21 runners.

The Husker women elected tri-captains for the first time in program history. Seniors Micheala Lenihan (Omaha, Neb.) and Kayte Tranel (Hampton, Neb.), as well as junior Kim Pancoast (Cape Girardeau, Mo.) will lead the women’s team in 2005. Tranel, who also served as a co-captain in 2004, becomes only the fifth athlete in NU women’s history selected twice in a career.

The Nebraska men’s team selected a pair of juniors to lead the squad in Bryce Dickmeyer (Fremont, Neb.) and Aaron Nasers (Battle Creek, Mich.). Dickmeyer and Nasers are the first pair of non-seniors chosen as team captains since 1983, while they also are only the third set of co-captains during that time.

Dirksen also announced the Huskers’ 2005 schedule Friday. Nebraska will open its season on Saturday, Sept. 3 in Omaha, Neb., with the Creighton/Nebraska-Omaha Classic. Following an off week, the Huskers will play host to their lone home meet of the season, the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational, at Lincoln’s Pioneer’s Park.
