2005 Outlook: Junior college transfer Seth Svoboda (pronounced SW?-b?-da) comes to Nebraska after one year at Independence Community College ? One of nine Nebraska natives in this year’s recruiting class ? Missed the entire fall after suffering a triceps injury at the end of the summer, but is near 100 percent for the start of winter practice ? Works very quickly on the mound and has the ability to throw strikes ? Looks to provide innings out of the bullpen.

Independence Community College/Kearney High School: Spent one season at Independence (Kan.) Community College playing for Coach Jon Olsen ? Served as the ace of the Pirate staff in 2004, going 8-4 with 5.04 ERA as a freshman ? Led the team in innings pitched (82), strikeouts (67), starts (16) and complete games (3), setting school marks for wins, starts, innings and strikeouts ? Played for Coach Bob Steinkamp’s Beatrice Bruins in 2004, going 6-1 with a 1.83 ERA in nine starts ? Topped the Bruins in wins and strikeouts (54), as he allowed 40 hits and held opponents to a .206 average in 54 innings of work ? Lettered in three sports at Kearney High School, playing football, basketball and track while playing American Legion baseball during the summer ? Excelled in the classroom, earning academic all-conference honors in basketball in 2002 ? Looked at Kansas State and Bellevue University before choosing to become a Husker.

Father (Tom) played college baseball at Central Technical CC in Hastings, while his grandfather (Martin Svoboda) was a semi-pro baseball player for Stromsberg in the early 1950s.
