Lincoln ? The University of Nebraska athletic department is pleased to announce that 19 current or former student-athletes will graduate during commencement activities this weekend.
The 2004 Summer Commencement ceremonies will take place on Saturday, Aug. 14, at 9:30 a.m. at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
The summer graduation class features current or former student-athletes from 10 programs (baseball, bowling, football, men's basketball, men's golf, men's track and field, soccer, women's gymnastics, women's tennis and women's track and field).
One current Husker athlete participating in Saturday’s ceremony is senior linebacker Ira Cooper, who will receive his degree in sociology. Cooper joins fullback Steve Kriewald, who graduated in May with a major in construction management, as seniors who have already received their degrees from Nebraska.
Former All-Big 12 defensive lineman Steve Warren will graduate from NU on Saturday. Warren, who played at Nebraska from 1996 to 1999 before embarking on a professional career with the Green Bay Packers, will become the 23rd of 25 football seniors from the 1999 season to receive their undergraduate degrees from Nebraska.
A quartet of baseball players who led Nebraska to its first College World Series appearance also highlight the summer graduates. Jeff Leise (2000-03) was a two-time Academic All-American of the Year and earned first-team All-America honors in 2003, while John Cole (1999-2001) earned All-America and Academic All-America honors in 2001 before embarking on a professional career with the Seattle Mariners. Leise will receive his degree in psychology, while Cole is graduating with a degree in business administration. Thom Ott, who pitched at NU in 2000 and 2001 and Jeff Blevins, a two-year starter for NU's two CWS teams (2001-02) will also participate in graduation ceremonies.
Other All-Americans or Academic All-Americans scheduled to graduate on Saturday include track athletes Tia DeSoto, who was named a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2004, and Danny Hill, a third-team selection this past spring and gymnasts Libby Landgraf, who earned both All-America and Academic All-America honors in her career, and Jess Wertz.
Other student-athletes scheduled to participate in ceremonies this weekend include Adam Bohac (men's basketball), Kevin Carter (men's track), Brennon Clemmons (men's basketball), Kedrick Ford (men's basketball), Paola Gomez (bowling), Rebecca Harvey (women's tennis), Chris Hartwig (men's golf), Jim Troy (men's golf), Amanda Moreley (women's track) and Kori Saunders (soccer).
In all, 91 percent of Husker student-athletes who complete their eligibility receive their degree from the University of Nebraska, a total that leads the Big 12 Conference.
A private graduation reception for student-athletes and their families will be held at Memorial Stadium following Saturday’s commencement ceremony. A complete listing of graduating student-athletes with majors and hometowns is listed below.
