Davies, Schrad Named Big 12 Postgraduate Scholarship Winners

Lincoln -- A pair of former Nebraska standouts were honored by the Big 12 Conference on Wednesday, as Judd Davies and Anna Schrad were chosen the winners of the Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarship for 2004. They join two representatives from each of the other 11 conference schools, as a total of 24 selected scholar-athletes were honored for their achievements in the classroom and on the athletic fields.

Davies was a three-year starter at fullback for the Husker football team and graduated with a 3.886 GPA in pre-medicine and communication studies last December. A team co-captain, Davies helped Nebraska to a 10-3 record and a win in the 2003 Alamo Bowl. He also completed his career with 14 rushing touchdowns, setting a school record for fullbacks. In the classroom, he was a four-time academic All-Big 12 honoree and earned second-team CoSIDA Academic All-America honors in 2003. An NCAA postgraduate scholarship winner, Davies was selected as Nebraska Male Student-Athlete of the Year in April and has been accepted into medical school this fall.

Schrad played an instrumental role in helping the Husker volleyball team to three Big 12 titles and the school's second NCAA crown (2000) during her collegiate career. A three-year starter for the Big Red and team co-captain, she was chosen to three all-tournament teams as a senior, as Nebraska compiled 28 wins and reached the NCAA Regional semifinals. Schrad also excelled in the classroom, earning first-team academic All-Big 12 honors on three occasions and garnering second-team CoSIDA Academic All-America honors in 2003. She currently owns 3.905 GPA and will graduate with a degree in exercise science this December.

Criteria for these awards include a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 on a 4.0 scale, participation in at least two years of intercollegiate athletics at the scholar-athlete's respective institution, and completion of athletics' eligibility. The scholar-athletes also must graduate from their respective member institutions within 15 months of their selection as postgraduate scholarship recipients and are expected to enroll in graduate/professional schools within two years after they graduate.

Conference officers voted to name the postgraduate scholarship program awards after longtime Big 12 and Big Eight Conference Associate Commissioner and student services' pioneer Dr. Prentice Gautt in 2004.
