Nebraska softball players Peaches James, Kim Ogee and Lisa Wangler have been named to the initial watch list for the second annual USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Ward by the Amateur Softball Association, the national governing body of softball in the United States. The initial watch list is comprised of 40 players represent 23 teams and 11 different conferences.
Ogee, a third-team NFCA All-American in 2002, did it all for NU last year. The Omaha, Neb., native, led the Huskers in nine offensive categories, including batting average (.356), home runs (10), walks (37) and steals (31). Ogee ranks among the top five all-time at NU in batting average, hits, runs scored, stolen bases and doubles. This season, she leads NU with a .467 batting average and a .579 on-base percentage
After just two seasons in the program, James already ranks among the Nebraska career leaders in victories, winning percentage, earned-run average, strikeouts, shutouts and saves. A second-team NFCA All-Midwest Region pick in 2002, James posted a 22-9 record with two wins over top-five teams. She finished the season with a 1.33 ERA, holding teams to a .182 average in 227 innings pitched. In 2003, James is 3-0 and already has two wins over top-15 teams. James owns a 0.74 ERA in 19 innings pitched and has held opponents to a .159 average.
Wangler made an immediate impact after transfering to Nebraska last season from Oregon during the summer of 2001. She ranked second on the team and seventh in the Big 12 with a .345 batting average en route to earning second-team all-conference honors. Wangler ranked second on the squad and was tied for fourth in the Big 12 with 21 stolen bases. In 2003, Wangler is batting .438 (7-for-16) with two home runs, three doubles and eight RBIs in five games at the ASU/ Fiesta Bowl Classic.
The first 25 finalists for the award will be announced on April 8. The list will then be reduced to 10 players on April 29, and the final three finalists will be named on May 13th. The winner of the 2003 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award will be announced at the 2003 NCAA Women
