Owusu Sets Big 12 Record in 600 Yards at NU Last Chance

By NU Athletic Communications
Lincoln, Neb. -- Nebraska senior All-American Lesley Owusu posted a Big 12 Conference record time of 1:17.92 in the 600 yards, while several other Huskers improved their season-best times at the Nebraska Last Chance meet Saturday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Though it is not an NCAA-meet event, Owusu set out to record a personal-best time in 600 yards on Saturday. She accomplished the feat, breaking the conference record, the school record and the Devaney Sports Center record as well. Her time also ranks second on the all-time world list, behind Delisa Walton-Floyd's record time of 1:17.38, set in 1982.

"In the back of my mind, I thought I was capable of breaking the record," Owusu said. "I didn't think I would run that fast with no competition. I motivated myself. I don't want anyone to forget the name Owusu. I want to be on the Nebraska record board for years to come. I want my legacy to remain."

Owusu, from Slough, Berkshire, England, has notched an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 52.37 in the 400 meters, which ranks second nationally, and has posted a provisional time of 23.73 in the 200 meters. The 2001 NCAA Indoor Championships will take place in Fayetteville, Ark., next Friday and Saturday (March 9-10).

Also improving their season-best marks were sophomores Leann Boerema, David Davis and Jess Kirchhoff.

Boerema won the shot put with a personal-best and provisional qualifying mark of 52-6
