No. 6 Sooners Top Nebraska Wrestlers, 33-12

Lincoln, Neb. -- The Nebraska wrestling team fell to sixth-ranked Oklahoma, 33-12, Friday night at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in front of 629 fans. The 25th-ranked Huskers fell to 8-7 and have dropped three matches in a row, while OU improved to 16-4.

The Sooners got off to a quick start, building a 13-0 lead after the first three weights. At 133 pounds, third-ranked Witt Durden scored a 16-3 major decision win over NU sophomore Joey Malia, before 11th-ranked Nate Parker defeated Dusty Spaulding 5-2 at 141 pounds.

In his home debut, sophomore Travis Shufelt put up a tough fight early against seventh-ranked Jared Frayer at 149 pounds, but was pinned at the 2:33 mark.

Three-time All-American Bryan Snyder answered for the Huskers at 157 pounds, scoring a fall of his own against 12th-ranked Doug Cieleski in just 3:59. Snyder, who improved to 25-0 with the win, has scored bonus points in 24 of his 25 matches (Ten technical falls, nine pins, five major decisions).

At 165 pounds, OU rebounded with its second fall of the night as eighth-ranked Robbie Waller pinned junior Jason High in 1:55 to give the Sooners a 19-6 lead.

Senior Tony Denke cut the Oklahoma lead to 19-9 as he scored the 5-3 upset of 14th-ranked Michael Barger at 174 pounds. A Longvalley, S.D., native, trailed 2-1 with less than 10 seconds remaining, but Denke scored a takedown and two-point near-fall to come away with the win. Denke improved to 14-6 on the season.

Nebraska was in position for its second upset at the night at 184 pounds as seventh-ranked Josh Lambrecht of OU and 15th-ranked Travis Pascoe went to sudden victory overtime tied at three. In the extra period, Pascoe got in on a single leg with 30 seconds remaining, but Lambrecht quickly reversed the position and put Pascoe to his back, scoring the pin at the 7:40 mark to put OU up 25-9.

Redshirt freshman Justin Ruiz gave Nebraska its third win of the night at 197 pounds with an 8-3 decision over 12th-ranked Tom Grossman. Ruiz, a native of Murray, Utah, upped his overall record to 21-7 with the win.

At heavyweight, the Sooners went up 30-12 with a 19-2 technical fall by third-ranked Leonce Crump over Nebraska junior Pat Miron, who fell to 8-13 on the year.
