Lincoln -- The Nebraska volleyball team, ranked No. 1 in the AVCA/USA Today Coaches top 25 Poll released Monday afternoon, begins a quest to defend its 1999 Big 12 Conference title when it plays host to two league matches this week. The Huskers will take on Texas (1-4) Wednesday, Sept. 13, and Missouri (8-0) Saturday, Sept. 16 at the NU Coliseum. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
The Huskers, 7-0 overall, will have momentum and history on their side when they open league play. Nebraska took over the top spot in the AVCA/USA Today Coaches poll after defeating then-No. 22 Notre Dame, then-No. 16 Michigan State and then-No. 3 UCLA in three straight matches at the Notre Dame adidas Invitational Sept. 8-10 in South Bend, Ind. The poll marks the first time that Nebraska has been ranked No. 1 since the 1995 national championship season.
