Nebraska Takes Two From UMKC

By NU Athletic Communications
Lincoln, Neb. - Pitchers Peaches James and Leigh Ann Walker each tossed a complete game shutout to lead the fourth-ranked Nebraska softball team to a doubleheader sweep over UMKC before 454 fans Wednesday night at Bowlin Stadium.

James (15-4) allowed three hits and struck out four Kangeroos for a 1-0 win in game one. In the second game of the twin bill, Walker (18-2) allowed just one hit and struck out nine UMKC batters in 5.0 innings, as the Huskers (33-6) took an 8-0 run-rule victory.

Offensively, the Huskers produced just two hits in game one off UMKC pitcher Lindsey Davis, scoring their lone run on an RBI single by senior third baseman Cindy Roethemeyer in the bottom of the fifth. NU turned things around in game two, however, racking up 12 hits off UMCK pitchers Shelly Miller and Jill Dolan. Junior left fielder Lisa Wangler led the way, going 3-for-3 for a double in game two. Sophomore first baseman Nicole Trimboli was 2-for-2 with a double, and junior catcher Amber Burgess recorded the first triple of her career in the bottom of the fifth, driving in two runs and pulling the Huskers within a run of the run-rule decision.

The Huskers secured the five-inning victory when freshman pinch hitter Kira Boerkircher ripped an RBI single to left center, plating Burgess for the 8-0 win.
