Huskers Take Sixth at Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships

College Station, Texas - The University of Nebraska swimming and diving team took home sixth-place at the 2002 Big 12 Championships in College Station, Texas, Saturday night. The Huskers finished the four-day meet with 186 points, while Texas claimed its fourth consecutive Big 12 crown (1,055.5). Texas A&M finished runner-up (675 points) and Missouri (522 points), Iowa State (500 points) and Kansas (487.5 points) rounded out the team scoring.

The Huskers took spots five thru seven in the consolation final of the 100-yard breaststroke. Juniors Laura Landgreen (fifth, 2:31.64), Catherine Clark (sixth, 2:45.72) and Kristin Vahle (seventh, 2:52.39) finished 13th thru 15th, respectively overall.

Freshman Kristen Gordon took seventh in the consolation final and 15th overall in the 200-yard backstroke after touching the wall in 2:14.72 (2:13.78p).

In the diving well, junior Jeni Fortino was the only Husker diver competing on the final day. Fortino claimed 15th on the platform dive with a score of 286.45 for her nine dives.

Also scoring for the Huskers was freshman Diana Torres. Torres took sixth in the consolation final of the 200-yard butterfly. Torres
