Huskers Struggle; Hang On To Beat Oklahoma City University

Lincoln-After beating their last five opponents by a combined total of 45-0 the University of Nebraska women's tennis team finally had some competition. The Huskers held on the defeat Oklahoma City University, who was preseason ranked No. 3 in NAIA, 6-3 Sunday at the Woods Tennis Center.

Nebraska's top two singles players both struggled. Senior Sandra Noetzel, who was suffering from a shoulder injury, lost her first match of the season 6-4, 6-0 to Oklahoma City's Anne Lequennec. In No. 2 singles junior Ndali Ijomah suffered her second loss of the season falling to Marisue Jacutin 6-3, 6-3. Nebraska did win their other four singles matches to stay in contention. Freshman Maria Fernandez improved her record to 9-1 with a victory over Melisa Lemus. Katarina Balan, Nebraska's lone remaining undefeated player, upped her record to 10-0 with a 6-1, 7-6 victory over Cecilia Akesson. Senior Gina Pelazini and Sophomore Amy Frisch also picked up wins.

In doubles action, Seniors Sandra Noetzel, and Gina Pelazini, who were ranked No. 22 in the nation, fell to Anne Lequennec and Marisue Jacutin 8-5. The Huskers clinched the victory when Maria Fernandez and Katarina Balan defeated Melisa Lemus and Sandia Nilsson at No. 2 doubles. Fernandez and Balan trailed 5-3 in the match before coming back to win 8-6.

Freshman Maria Fernandez said that her and Katarina did not lose their cool when they were trailing in their doubles match. "We were nervous, but we knew we could do it." Maria said that she thinks that having this close match helped her team. "It gives us more confidence knowing that we can be down and still win. It will just make us better."

Nebraska will be on the road next weekend when the travel to Ames, Iowa, Saturday, March 11, to face Iowa State in a 10 a.m. match. The Huskers will then travel to Boulder Colorado to play nationally ranked Colorado on Sunday, March 12.
