Huskers Run-Rule Boston College; Fall to Colorado State

By NU Athletic Communications
Columbus, Ga. --- The No. 8 Nebraska softball team found its offense Saturday night in the Bronze Medal bracket quarterfinals and parlayed it into a 10-hit, 10-run, five-inning performance for a 10-2 win over Boston College at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga. The win came just a few hours after Nebraska finished up pool play with a 3-2 loss to Colorado State. The Huskers now have a 2-2 record at the NFCA Classic and a 6-3 record on the year. The 10 hits against Boston College almost matched the three-game hit total of 12 Nebraska had produced in prior tournament games.

All-American Jenny Voss went to the mound against the Boston College Eagles and allowed two quick runs to score in the top of the first paced by a leadoff doubles from Lauren Fischetti. Nebraska answered the Eagles rally with four runs of its own in the first, thanks to singles by Ginger Taylor and Jamie Fuente and a key sacrifice fly by Kelly Pinkepank. Nebraska added five more runs in the bottom of the fourth when Jill Baker, Jennifer Lizama and Taylor singled followed by a base-clearing triple by transfer Ellen Middleton. Defensively, Voss shut down the Eagles after the first inning, no-hitting Boston College in the final four innings. Voss improved to 4-1 on the year with the complete-game win. Taylor went 3-for-4 in the game with two runs scored. Baker, a true freshman, added two hits of her own in her second career start.

In the first game of the day, neither team put up big offensive numbers. With one out in the second inning, Colorado State's Stephanie Norton slapped an infield single. After Beth DesJardins came in to pinch run for Norton she was moved to second on a CSU bunt. The next batter, Leslie Strassel, singled to center field to bring around DesJardins from second and make it 1-0 CSU. Meanwhile, Nebraska wasn't able to collect a hit until the sixth inning. The sixth started with Jill Baker reaching on an error by the CSU third baseman. Jennifer Lizama then drew a walk that moved Baker over to second base. A fielders choice by Jessica Draemel got Baker out at third which brought up Middleton with runners on first and second. Middleton dribbled a hit to the CSU second baseman who mishandled it allowing Lizama to score. Fuente singled to center in the next at bat to put Nebraska up 2-1 with an inning to play. But CSU came back in the seventh when CSU's Holly Schmillen singled to right center scoring a pair of CSU runners. Lori Tschannen picked up her first loss of the season.

Nebraska will play Massachusetts (4-5) at 11:30 a.m. (EST) Sunday. The winner will advance to the Bronze bracket final to play the winner of Central Michigan and Nicholls State. The loser will be eliminated from the tournament. The NFCA Leadoff Classic was broken into three brackets
