Huskers Run Down Roadrunners, 81-63
A 6-2 junior from Indianapolis, Clemmons carried the Huskers in the first half, scoring all 14 of his points on 6-of-8 shooting before the break, as the Huskers capitalized on a quick start and withstood an outstanding performance from UTSA's Devin Brown to win their third straight contest.
Clemmons was one of four Huskers who finished in double figures. Freshman Jake Muhleisen led the Huskers with 16 points, while Cary Cochran and Brian Conklin chipped in 14 and 11 points, respectively, as NU shot 48 percent from the floor and enjoyed a 45-35 advantage on the glass.
NU's three-guard lineup of Clemmons, Muhleisen and Cochran combined for 14 of the Huskers' first 16 points, before NU built a double-digit lead for most of the final 35 minutes. The trio combined for 26 of the Huskers' 36 first-half points, as Cochran and Muhleisen added six points apiece before intermission.
Trailing 36-24 at halftime, UTSA scored the first five points to close within seven, forcing NU to call a time out. The Huskers quickly responded, as Muhleisen hit a driving lay-up on NU's ensuing possession before the 6-4 guard from Lincoln hit a three-pointer 27 seconds later.
Brown kept the Roadrunners, who fell to 2-1 on the season, within striking distance, scoring 25 of his 33 points in the second half, as Brown scored over half of UTSA's points. The 6-5 senior tied a Roadrunner record with eight three-pointers on 14 attempts, while his eight threes tied a Husker opponent record.
Brown, who was 10-of-18 from the floor in 36 minutes, was the lone offensive highlight for the visitors, who shot just 33 percent from the floor. Besides Brown, the rest of the Roadrunners shot just 23 percent (10-of-43) from the field, including 2-of-19 from long range.
UTSA, which missed nine of first 12 shots from the floor, was hurt early, as McEverett Powers committed a pair of offensive fouls in the first 2:33 and sat for much of the first half. UTSA's leading scorer, Powers scored four points in four minutes and finished with 12 points, eight under his 20.0 ppg average.
The Huskers return to action this Sunday when NU plays host to Wofford at 2:05 p.m.
Nebraska postgame notes
