Huskers Come Up Just Short Against No. 1 Kansas
Playing in front of the largest home crowd since 1998 -- and second home sellout this season -- the Huskers cashed in on a school and Devaney Center record 18 three-pointers to nearly pull off the upset of the nation's top-ranked team. Three Huskers finished with at least four three-pointers apiece, led by Cochran and Robinson's six treys each.
Nebraska was up four points, 85-81, on Robinson's three-pointer with 1:58 to play, before the Jayhawks finally got over the top. Drew Gooden, who finished with a game-high 26 points and 14 rebounds, hit a jumper and Brett Ballard added a layup to tie it at 85-85 with 57 seconds left. Cochran's two free throws 12 seconds later put NU on top by two, 87-85, before KU freshman Keith Langford hit a three-pointer, his only three-point attempt of the game, to give the Jayhawks a one-point edge.
But Nebraska had the ball with the shot clock off and chance for the victory. Jake Muhleisen's shot was blocked out of bounds and the Huskers were forced to use their last time out on the following play, setting up the Huskers' last-second try at the victory. Nebraska's inbound pass was tipped away before Robinson chased it down in the backcourt and brought it up. His shot came off the rim with six seconds left and John Turek's tip back at the goal missed its mark as well with three seconds remaining, giving KU the win and the league title.
