Sacramento, Calif. -- The fifth-ranked Nebraska softball team broke the school record for consecutive wins Sunday afternoon with a 4-3 win over No. 7 California in the championship game of the Capital Classic. The Huskers, who improved to 25-5 overall and 8-0 in the tournament, have won 19 straight games dating back to a Feb. 22 win over Louisiana State.

Junior left fielder Lisa Wangler drove in the winning run in the top of the eighth inning against Cal. The Huskers sent sophomore right fielder Briana Bates to second base per the international tiebreaker rule. Bates advanced to third as Kim Ogee grounded out to short. Wangler then ripped a single to left, plating Bates for the go-ahead run.

NU preserved the win in the bottom of the eighth. NU pitcher Leigh Ann Walker froze Kelly Anderson at the plate, and Jessica Pamanian lined out to third for the first two outs. Kaleo Eldredge singled and advanced Jessica Vernalgia to third, bringing up Kristen Morley. Morley smacked what looked like a sure hit to shallow left field, but NU junior shortstop Amanda Buchholz ran backwards and made a diving grab over her right shoulder to secure the 4-3 win.
