Husker Shooters Fall to Kentucky

Lexington, Ky. - In its second contest of the season, the Nebraska rifle team lost a close match to 2001 NCAA runner-up Kentucky. The Huskers matched the Wildcats in the air rifle, but could not equal UK's smallbore score, falling 6,213-6,099 at Buell Armory on Saturday.

The Huskers were led by junior Amanda Trujillo in the smallbore and sophomore Melissa Downsbrough in the air rifle. Trujillo fired a season-high 1,168 with the .22 caliber rifle to finish third overall. Downsbrough fired a 1,159, followed by senior Rachel Spiry (1,139) and sophomore Karen Aspden (1,088). The Huskers tallied 4,554 points to the Wildcats' 4,668.

In the air rifle competition, Downsbrough shot a 388 to finish fifth overall, followed by Trujillo and Spiry, who each fired a 387. Senior Terim Richards rounded out the scoring for the Huskers with a 383.

Freshman Alicia Sawyer, competing unattached, tied for second with Kentucky's Bradley Wheeldon in the air rifle (389), and finished seventh in the smallbore (1,156).

On Sunday, Nebraska will make the short trek to Cincinnati, Ohio, for the Walsh Invitational Rifle Match.
