Qwest Center Omaha opened its doors in September 2003 as the centerpiece to Omaha’s $1.6 billion riverfront revitalization project. Qwest Center Omaha catapulted Omaha into the spotlight with top-name concerts including Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, the Police and U2. The arena consistently ranks as a Top 20 ticket selling arena in the world by Pollstar Magazine.
Top sporting events held at Qwest Center Omaha include the 2006 Division I Women’s Volleyball National Championships, the 2008 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship First and Second Rounds and the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Swimming.
This year season will mark the second time that Qwest Center Omaha has hosted Division I Women’s Volleyball National Championships. In 2006, the event drew an NCAA Volleyball all-session record of 34,222, while the 17,209 fans that witnessed the championship match were part of the largest crowd in collegiate volleyball history. The arena is home to the Creighton University men’s basketball program and the University of Nebraska at Omaha men’s hockey program. The arena floor can be converted from a basketball court to a hockey rink in less than two hours. A seating expansion project took place during the summer of 2006 when approximately 1,500 seats were added, bringing capacity to 17,500.
The Qwest Center Omaha Convention Center hosts many citywide conventions such as the Berkshire Hathaway Annual Shareholders Meeting and Pheasants Forever. The Exhibit Hall features more than 194,000 square feet of space. The 30,996-square foot Peter Kiewit Grand Ballroom is the largest ballroom in Omaha. The Junior Ballroom and 12 meeting rooms can accommodate all types of functions. In 2006, the Qwest Center Omaha Convention Center was named Best Convention Center from national trade magazine, Meetings MidAmerica.
Qwest Center Omaha credits its success to the strong community support it has received. In return, the Qwest Center Omaha team strives to bring world-class sports, entertainment and events to Omaha. Some of the future events include the 2009 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Regional and the 2010 Division I NCAA Wrestling Championship along with the Runza/AVCA Showcase for the next two years.
