OMAHA – The Omaha Sports Commission, the City of Omaha and Douglas County will kick off Volleyball Week with an interactive volleyball exhibition for youth and a special presentation at Qwest Center Omaha on Tuesday, December 12.

Mayor Mike Fahey will officially declare Volleyball Week in Omaha immediately following a free interactive youth volleyball exhibition at Qwest Center Omaha. These events lead up to the 2006 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship, which will be held Dec. 14 and 16 at Qwest Center.

"The University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Qwest Center Omaha are doing a great job as hosts for one of the premier volleyball events in the country," said Dan Morrissey, president of the Omaha Sports Commission. "The Omaha Sports Commission's goal is to assist them in kicking off this great championship. We want to turn Omaha into the center of the volleyball world during the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship, and we are convinced that fans across the country, NCAA officials, student-athletes and coaches are going to leave here with a great appreciation for what Omaha has to offer."

The free 90-minute interactive youth volleyball exhibition will begin at 7 p.m. in Hall A at the Qwest Center Omaha Convention Center, and will feature hands-on exhibitions and demonstrations with former Nebraska student-athlete and current Omaha South volleyball coach Renee Saunders. The interactive exhibition will be for kids ages 8 to 14, and will focus on preparation, drills for the participants and volleyball-related games.

Registration for the interactive exhibition will open at 6 p.m. The first 900 participants will receive a free mini-volleyball from the Omaha Sports Commission. Molten USA, a sporting goods company based in Reno, Nev., will provide the volleyballs used during the interactive exhibition. Molten USA is the official volleyball supplier for the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship.

"As the official ball of the event, Molten USA is pleased to help the Omaha Sports Commission support future players through our donation of Molten youth and regulation volleyballs for the interactive exhibition scheduled to serve up the start of volleyball week in Omaha," said Char Taguinod, Director of Marketing at Molten USA.

Immediately following the clinic, Mayor Fahey will make a special presentation, and will unveil an 80-foot high banner on the outside of Qwest Center Omaha to officially launch Volleyball Week.
