2009 Game by Game (updated 12-14-09)
Florida Atlantic: Posted one of team’s six PBU’s in season opener... added two solo tackles. Arkansas State: Started second straight game of season but did not record a tackle. Virginia Tech: Doubled his season total by posting three tackles, including two assists. Louisiana-Lafayette: Recorded two tackles, including one solo stop. Missouri: Did not play. Texas Tech: Played in third and fourth quarters on defense but did not have a tackle. Iowa State: Played but did not record a tackle. Baylor: Made one tackle but had a pair of pass breakups. Oklahoma: Played but did not record a tackle. Kansas: Played but did not record a tackle. Kansas State: Returned to starting lineup as Alfonzo Dennard sat out with injury... had three solo stops to tie season high for tackles... helped NU limit Wildcats to just 153 passing yards. Colorado: Played but did not have a tackle. Texas: Played in the game but did not record a tackle.
This fall the Nebraska secondary is much more experienced with seven returning players with 2008 starting experience. The 6-0, 200-pound West is expected to return to a starting role and anchor the cornerback group, while several other players will battle for the open starting job left by the graduation of Armando Murillo.
2008 (Sophomore)
West held down the right cornerback spot opposite Murillo and played in 12 games with 11 starts while missing one contest because of injury. He finished with 29 tackles, including 23 solo stops and tied Murillo for the team lead with nine breakups. The San Diego native had six games with at least three tackles. West also continued to excel on Nebraska’s kickoff coverage team in 2008.
West recorded his first career interception in the season opener against Western Michigan, returning the pick 26 yards. He also had two breakups in the 47-24 victory. West posted the second sack of his career against San Jose State, while adding three solo stops. He had four tackles at Oklahoma, then had a career day against Kansas, breaking up three passes while adding six tackles, including five solo stops, all career highs. He added two pass breakups at Kansas State. In the Gator Bowl win over Clemson, West had his second interception in the second quarter.
2007 (Redshirt Freshman)
West served as a reserve cornerback and also saw time on special teams. His most extensive defensive action came when Nebraska went to five and six defensive backs. West made six tackles, including four solo stops. He made three tackles at Missouri, before making two solo stops against Texas A&M. Both of his tackles against the Aggies were for losses (11 yards), including a nine-yard sack. West added two quarterback hurries against Kansas State and had a tackle against Colorado.
2006 (Redshirt)
With injuries in the secondary, West was prepared to play, but redshirted.
Before Nebraska (Point Loma HS)
West was one of seven Californians in the 2006 class and came to NU from Point Loma High School in San Diego. As a senior, West rushed for 1,320 yards and 14 touchdowns on 174 carries, and had 17 receptions for 341 yards and four touchdowns. He also tallied 36 tackles on defense in helping Coach Mike Hastings’ Point Loma squad finish as runner-up in the 2005 CIF Division III championship to St. Augustine High School and fellow Nebraska recruit Menelik Holt. As a junior, West rushed for 449 yards on 67 carries, scoring seven touchdowns. He added 13 tackles on defense.
PrepStar placed West on its All-West region team. West also received recruiting interest from UCLA, Texas Tech, San Diego State and Utah.
Personal
The son of Robert and Marguerite West, Anthony was born on March 29, 1988. He is a sociology major and has volunteered with NU’s hospital visits.
