2009 Outlook Joe Broekemeier (pronounced Brock-myer) joined the Husker football team in August of 2009 looking to work his way into the quarterback rotation. Also a pitcher on the Husker baseball team, Broekemeier brings a strong arm to the position. A native of Aurora, Neb., he will have two seasons of eligibility on the gridiron.
Husker Baseball Career Broekemeier has been a member of the Husker baseball team since 2007, although he saw his first game action in 2009. Broekemeier redshirted as a true freshman in 2007, then missed the 2008 season because of a back injury. Broekemeier appeared in eight games in 2009, compiling a 1-0 record with a 5.60 ERA. In 10.2 innings, he allowed only nine hits as opposing batters hit just .243 against him. In his seven relief appearances, Broekemeier was outstanding, posting a 1.69 ERA.
Before Nebraska (Aurora High School) Broekemeier was one of the state’s top multi-sport athletes competing in football, basketball, track and American Legion baseball during his prep career. He was selected as the Grand Island Independent’s Boys High School Athlete of the Year in 2005-06 and was rated as the top high school player in the state for the 2006 MLB Draft by Baseball America. Broekemeier was a two-way performer on the diamond, going 4-2 with a 2.19 ERA on the mound, striking out 22 over 22.1 innings as a senior. Offensively, he hit .480 with nine homers, 49 RBIs, 49 runs scored and 18 stolen bases, as Aurora placed fourth at the 2006 Class B state tournament. Broekemeier enjoyed a strong junior campaign by going 7-3 with a 0.91 ERA while striking out 70 in 46 innings and batting .401 with seven homers, 45 RBIs and 31 stolen bases. He also excelled on the basketball court, starting four years at point guard, setting a school record with 1,334 career points in leading Aurora to back-to-back state tournament showings. Broekemeier was named captain of the Class B All-State team in 2005-06, after averaging 18 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals per game. In the spring, Broekemeier ran track for four seasons, placing fourth in the state in the 200 meters and anchoring the 4x400 relay to a state runner-up showing.
Personal Joe Broekemeier was born on April 8, 1987, in Central City, Neb. His parents are Dale and Karla Broekemeier and his father was a wrestler at Nebraska-Kearney. A business administration major, Joe has two brothers, Matt and Tyson.
