2009 Game by Game (updated 12-14-09)
Florida Atlantic: Had strong hand in season opener, finishing with three tackles... nearly matched season total from 2008 when he had five tackles in 12 games. Arkansas State: Played on special teams and defense but did not record a tackle. Virginia Tech: Had one assisted tackle. Louisiana-Lafayette: Played on special teams and defense but did not record a tackle. Missouri: Made first career start at cornerback as Huskers opened in dime package... recorded four tackles, including three solo stops... added first career tackle for loss of four yards... also had first career pass breakup as NU held Tigers to 134 yards passing. Texas Tech: Started second straight game... added two tackles, including solo tackle for loss of one yard... added team’s only pass breakup of the game. Iowa State: Had five tackles, including three solo stops... added second career TFL for one yard... had career-best two pass breakups, matching career total entering the game. Baylor: Had one tackle and one pass breakup before leaving with injury in first half. Oklahoma: Posted career-best six tackles, including four solos, to rank fifth on team... added fourth TFL of the season... also had a pass breakup before leaving with injury. Kansas: Had five solo stops to rank third on the team and just one off career best a week before... added a pass breakup, one of five on the day for NU. Kansas State: Injured -- did not play. Colorado: Returned from injury to start seventh game of season... had three tackles including two solo stops. Texas: Recorded just one tackle in the contest while helping limit Texas to just 202 yards of total offense.
2009 Outlook
Alfonzo Dennard (pronounced DEN-ard) earned immediate playing time as a true freshman for Nebraska, contributing on both defense and special teams. This fall the talented sophomore is expected to battle for a starting cornerback job in a deep Nebraska secondary. The 5-10, 190-pounder is a key element of a position group that also includes returning starter Anthony West, junior Prince Amukamara and fellow sophomore Anthony Blue.
Dennard is also likely to continue to serve a key role on special teams. A year ago, he was one of the Huskers' top kickoff return men and made an impact on coverage units.
2008 (Freshman)
Dennard appeared in each of the final 12 games and was one of three true freshmen to see extensive action for Nebraska in 2008. He saw the majority of his action on special teams, as he and Niles Paul formed an explosive kickoff return combination. Dennard returned eight kickoffs for 150 yards, an average of 18.8 yards per return. He closed the year with a 29-yard return against Colorado, then had a season-long 31-yard return in the Gator Bowl victory over Clemson.
Dennard also saw action on the kickoff coverage and punt return units, and had five tackles, including four solo stops. Dennard is an outstanding athlete who excelled on both sides of the ball for Wilcox County High School in Georgia. Dennard is one of five players expected to begin their Nebraska careers in the secondary. He is also the first scholarship player from Georgia since current New England Patriot Le Kevin Smith joined the Huskers in 2001.
In his senior season, Dennard played a leading role in helping North Wilcox and Coach Mark Ledford to a 13-2 record and state runner-up finish in Class A. Dennard lined up at cornerback on defense and made 53 tackles, while picking off five passes. Offensively, Dennard caught 39 passes for 780 yards and scored 14 touchdowns. The 5-10, 190-pound Dennard also used his speed to help Wilcox County on special teams, returning two kickoffs and one punt for touchdowns.
His performance as a senior earned Dennard first-team Class A all-state honors from the Georgia Sportswriters Association. Dennard also piled up big numbers as a junior. Offensively he caught 45 passes for 840 yards and 12 touchdowns, while rushing 24 times for 240 yards and another six touchdowns. On the defensive side, Dennard made 60 tackles and six interceptions. Dennard’s athleticism also made him a valuable performer for the basketball and track teams.
He served as the point guard for Wilcox County’s hoops team and used his speed in sprint events during track in the spring. He finished sixth in the state in the long jump with a leap of 21-3. Dennard played in the GACA North-South All-Star game. He was ranked as one of the nation’s top 25 cornerbacks by Rivals.com and was listed among the top 40 overall prospects in the state of Georgia. Dennard chose Nebraska over North Carolina and Troy.

Dennard is the son of Rose Mary Dennard and was born on Sept. 9, 1989.
