2004 Outlook In 2003 Nebraska hit 76 homers, but just 17 from left-handed hitters, including seven each from Jeff Leise and Alex Gordon. Junior college transfer Beau Sullivan will look to fill that void this spring, as he brings a powerful bat from the left side of the plate. He earned all-region honors at Seminole (Okla.) State Junior College, hitting nine homers and driving in 52 runs. During the fall, Sullivan saw a majority of duty at first base, batting .293 with a pair of homers, nine RBIs and 12 runs scored.
While Sullivan will look to bring some power to the NU lineup, he is also an excellent defensive presence. Sullivan will back up All-America candidate Curtis Ledbetter at first base and could also see time at designated hitter.
"Beau has been one of our better workers during the winter, and we are encouraged by the progress he has made on his swing," Head Coach Mike Anderson said. "He gives us a left-handed stick with power, something we needed at times last year. He is also a very good defensive first baseman and that gives us some different options at the position without having a defensive drop off."
Sullivan will likely be joined in the Nebraska program by his younger brother, Tim, who signed a National Letter-of-Intent during the fall signing period.
Before Nebraska Sullivan comes to Nebraska from Seminole (Okla.) Junior College, where he played first base and pitched for Coach Eric Myers. As a sophomore, Sullivan batted .316 with nine homers and 52 RBIs, as the Trojans finished the 2003 season with a 45-11 record and a regional title. He was an all-regional honoree and was chosen for the NJCAA Region II All-Tournament team this spring, as he tied for the team lead with 18 doubles, while ranking second in both homers and RBIs. On the hill, he went 1-0 with two saves, striking out 13 in 8.1 innings. As a freshman, he hit .367 with four homers and 41 RBIs for a team that finished 46-14 and was one win away from the NJCAA World Series.
He attended Woodward High School, where he was a first-team All-Oklahoma selection by the Coaches Association and the Daily Oklahoman for Coach Greg Ward. He batted .530 with 10 homers, 25 doubles and 57 RBIs, while going 11-4 with a pair of saves, 100 strikeouts and a 2.07 ERA. Sullivan also excelled in the classroom, as he was his class salutatorian and was a four-year academic letterwinner. Sullivan also lettered three times in both football and basketball.
