2014 Outlook
Defensive tackle Maliek Collins is part of an impressive group of young players in the front seven of the Nebraska defense. The 6-2, 300-pound Collins was one of seven true freshmen to see action in 2013, and his development helped the Nebraska defense make large strides in the second half of the season.

Collins’ role grew late in the 2013 season and his surge continued into spring practice. After a strong offseason in the weight room, Collins established himself as a difference maker during spring ball and is poised to earn a starting spot in 2014. In addition to having the strength and power to hold up in the middle of the defensive front, Collins showed his versatility this spring by moving outside in some pass rushing situations.

2013 (Freshman)
Collins played in 12 games, including a start against Georgia in the Gator Bowl. He finished the season with 12 tackles. All of his stops came in either the first three games or the final four games.

Collins registered NU’s first sack of the season for 10 yards against Southern Miss. He totaled three tackles in that contest. He added a tackle for loss a week later against UCLA. Collins made eight tackles in the final four games, tying his season high with three tackles at Penn State, adding two each vs. Michigan State and Iowa, and then making one stop in the Gator Bowl.

Before Nebraska (Kansas City Center HS)
Collins played both ways for Kansas City Center High School and posted huge numbers on defense as a senior. Collins recorded 102 tackles in 2012, including 43 tackles for loss, 15 sacks, five forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. His play for Coach Bryan DeLong helped Center High to a 10-4 record and a trip to the quarterfinals of the Missouri Class 3A state playoffs, its deepest playoff run since 2004.

For his play as a senior, Collins was a first-team Class 3A all-state pick by the Missouri High School Coaches Association. He was also a member of the Kansas City Star’s All-Metro first-team defensive unit.

Collins was also a standout performer for Center High as a junior in 2011, earning first-team all-conference honors as both an offensive and defensive lineman. Beyond the football field, Collins was also a standout wrestler for Center High School. As a senior, Collins won the Missouri Class 2A state championship with a perfect 48-0 record. Collins reached the quarterfinals at the state meet in the heavyweight class as a junior and posted a 48-5 record.

Collins was ranked among the top 20 prospects in the state of Missouri and one of the top 25 defensive tackles in the country according to Fox Sports Next. He also visited Kansas and Missouri, and had offers from numerous other schools, including Arkansas, Iowa and Iowa State.

Collins was born on April 8, 1995, and is the son of Janice Davis and the late C.W. Collins. He has not declared a major. Collins has volunteered his time at the Belmont and Calvert rec centers, and also with the Husker Hotline, Husker Heroes and the Uplifting Athletes road race.
